FAQ about Walden’s Online Programs

Is Walden an accredited online university?

Walden University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (www.hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Accreditation is a mark of quality. Walden has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) since 1990.

Being accredited by the HLC validates that our institution lives its mission, operates with integrity, offers programs that focus on student learning, hires faculty that are academically qualified, and provides the resources and support necessary for our students to succeed. The Tempo Learning® platform is approved by HLC for each program where it is offered. Walden has also earned a number of programmatic accreditations from the following organizations:

  • Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  • Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
  • Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
  • Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)
  • Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)

Programmatic accreditation will help ensure a high-quality learning experience that meets rigorous accreditation standards set for a specific field, discipline, or profession.

Is Walden University considered a leader in online education?

Yes. Since 1970, Walden has supported working professionals in achieving their academic goals, initially through distance education and later online. Our flexible online learning environment features an accessible platform that lets you log in when it’s convenient for you, from wherever you are in the world. Walden curricula also include interactive multimedia simulations woven into a number of programs. An accredited university, Walden has further distinguished itself as being the sixth institution approved by the U.S. government to offer direct assessment competency-based education, via Tempo Learning®. The university has won a total of six Effective Practice Awards (2016–2019) from the Online Learning Consortium, recognizing “efforts that help make quality online education accessible … for anyone, anywhere, at any time.” And in May 2023, the U.S. Distance Learning Association (USDLA) recognized Walden with silver awards in three categories: innovation, research, and training. The award-winning initiatives are Doctoral Degree Coach®; research into inclusive online learning models; and faculty orientation, training, development, and support. According to USDLA, the awards were created “to acknowledge major accomplishments in distance learning and to highlight those distance learning instructors, programs, and professionals who have achieved and demonstrated extraordinary achievements."
