These are ranges of what a student can expect in terms of time and tuition cost to complete a degree. It does not include other fees, nor is it adjusted for tuition increases over time. Walden faculty has concluded that generally students who do not complete their program in eight years are unlikely to complete and only allow students to exceed that time frame when a student petitions for an extension and provides good reason for the delay and assurances that obstacles to completion can be overcome. Time is calculated using the time allowed for each semester or unit that the student completes. Students are encouraged to work continuously during the program so as not to extend the time needed to complete the degree as work can become stale and students lose focus. Students who earn two grades of “Unsatisfactory,” who repeatedly drop a course before a semester or unit has been completed, or are unable to complete in the eight year time frame, should expect that they may be dismissed from the program. Walden believes that it is in the best interest of a student who is unable to complete the degree in the stated ranges to strongly consider withdrawal or obtaining a lesser degree.

Time to completion and cost are not estimates of individual experience and will vary based on individual factors applicable to the student. Factors may be programmatic or academic such as tuition and fee increases and/or the student’s transfer credits accepted by Walden; program or specialization changes; unsuccessful course completion; credit load per term; writing, research and editing skills; use of external data for their doctoral study/dissertation; and/or individual progress in the program. Other factors may include personal issues such as the student’s employment obligations; care giving responsibilities or health issues; part-time vs. full-time enrollment; leaves of absence; and/or other personal circumstances.

Tuition and fees are subject to change. Books and materials are not included. Students may incur additional costs for remedial writing assistance, if necessary.

^This assumes students successfully complete their coursework on the first attempt.

Based on a 2.5-year minimum completion requirement and an 8-year maximum timeframe as outlined in Walden academic policy.

*Tuition and fees will be higher if students petition to extend the 8-year maximum timeframe or choose to take more expensive elective courses.

+Tuition and time to complete may be reduced if transfer credits are accepted, or if you receive grants, scholarships or other tuition discounts. For a personalized estimate of the number of your transfer credits that Walden would accept, call an Enrollment Specialist at 844-642-0198.

Doctor of Public Health FAQ

What is a DrPH degree?

The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree is a top credential for practitioners and administrators within the public health arena. Specifically, it’s a degree for professionals interested in advancing their careers and positively influencing public health issues within a community, regardless of its size. Candidates for Walden’s online DrPH degree program typically have professional experience in addition to having already earned their master’s degree

How do you choose the best online DrPH program?

Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree-seekers have many options when it comes to choosing the program that is right for them. However, a few key factors should always be considered before deciding, including accreditation, experiential learning opportunities, alternative points of program entry, and student support.

First, look for a program accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)—like Walden’s online DrPH program. CEPH accreditation provides assurance that a program has been evaluated and met accepted public health profession standards in practice, research, and service.

As you explore different programs, be sure to select one that gives you the opportunity to gain practical skills. For instance, in the final capstone study in Walden’s DrPH program, students build hands-on experience by using their newfound knowledge to address a real, pressing problem in the field.

It’s also important for an online DrPH degree program to meet you where you are in your academic journey. Walden, for example, offers two distinct DrPH entry paths. If you have a master’s degree in a discipline other than public health, you can opt for the traditional program track. If you have a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, you are eligible for a shorter track with fewer required credits and less coursework. This can allow you to complete your degree sooner, saving you both time and money. Both tracks include two residencies and a capstone study that must be completed to graduate.

Lastly, be sure you choose a university with a strong support team that is invested in helping you succeed. At Walden, you’ll benefit from personalized guidance from Enrollment Specialists, faculty, peer mentors, and academic writing coaches all during your online DrPH degree program. We also offer the Doctoral Degree Coach®, a digital resource to help you stay on track toward the doctoral finish line.

What can you do with a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH)?

A Doctor of Public Health degree can open the door to a wide range of professional opportunities in a variety of settings. Walden DrPH program graduates are academically prepared to pursue roles such as:

  • Epidemiologist
  • Medical and health services manager
  • Community health worker

Career options may require additional experience, training, or other factors beyond the successful completion of this degree program.

What is the difference between an online Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree and a PhD in Public Health?

In the simplest terms, a DrPH is designed for public health professionals, while a PhD in Public Health is designed for researchers. If you want to work in the field, enacting programs and policies, Walden’s online DrPH degree program can help you acquire the top-level knowledge you’ll need for effective leadership.

If you want to conduct research related to issues affecting public health, Walden’s PhD in Public Health program can help you focus on a research specialty, kick-start your research career, and put you on the path to making important contributions to our understanding of public health problems and solutions.
